Manchester City and Aguero Take to the Premier League Stage

Manchester City showed their full intentions for this seasons Premier League after crushing Swansea City 4-0 at the newly named Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City got off to a slow start with both teams entering the changing room at half-time at 0-0.  However a 58th minute goal from Edin Dzeko and the introduction of recent £38 million signing Sergio Aguero created another 2 goals in the 68th and 71st minute.

Aguero rounded off the score line 4-0 in extra time with an audacious shot from outside the penalty area in the to bottom corner of the goal, signalling his intent and talent for the season to come.  He could have even scored a hat-trick after Swansea’s keeper Vorn blocked a previous attempt on goal (his first touch of the game).

The incredible thing about last night’s game was the link-up play between David Silva and new signing Aguero.  Even with all their spending since being taken over back in 2008 by their Abu Dhabi owners (more than half a billion pounds in transfers), City have always lacked flair, creativity and pace upfront.  Tevez was the sole provider of this in my opinion and was the only reason Manchester City were able to secure 3rd spot in the Premier League last season.

However, the signings of the Spanish winger David Silva and 23 year old Argentinean striker Kun Aguero has feeded Manchester City with the pace, creativity and potency that they were lacking upfront.  Before his £38 million move to Manchester City, Aguero has scored 74 goals in 175 appearances for Athletico Madrid in addition to 13 goals in 25 games for Argentina.  His profligacy, experience and poise in front of goal is exactly what City have been craving for in my opinion if they are to pose any serious threat to the champions and their arch rivals Manchester Utd.

What Aguero brings to the table in my opinion is not just a goal scorer but someone who will make the runs, find passes and provide more creativity upfront.  As physical a team as City are with the likes of De Jong, Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure, Lescott and Kompany, they have often struggled to break down opposition defences high up the pitch.  They have also been relatively poor on the counter attack when you compare them to Man Utd, Barca, Real Madrid and Arsenal. However the signings of youthful players such as Aguero, Silva, Johnson and possibly Nasri will turn them into a Champions League and Premier League threatening team in my opinion.

The greatest thing about signing Aguero in my opinion is that at such as young age (23 years old) the manager is finally building a team which will continue to grow, mature and play better over time.  Joe Hart, Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott, Johnson, Silva and Aguero will all be playing in the 1st team here for the next 5 – 10 years.  In other words, City have finally created a winning generation of players just like you can see now at Manchester Utd with the likes of younger players such as Hernandez, Smalling, Wellbeck, De Gea and Phil Jones breaking into the first team.

The link-up play and reading between Silva and Aguero was outstanding and was evident by the 3 goals the paid of them created.  Silva has been by far the best signing Mancini has made so far.  His ability to launch attacks, score goals and passing ability makes him a top European player.  The addition of attacking midfielder Nasri would probably be the final straw to a squad that has look languished and tired at times in the centre of midfield. I think City’s midfield has definitely been too defensive at times this season with the likes of De Jong, Barry and Milner all playing defensively minded.  Having too many defensive minded players has ruined the link-up play to their attack of Tevez, Yaya Toure and Silva/Balotelli which is why City have struggled to score goals and realise their attacking talent on several occasions.
