Man Utd 2 – 0 Otelul Galati

Man Utd moved to the top of the Champions League Group C table with a 2-0 victory over Romanian champions Otelul Galati.

Largely unknown and unheard of to most viewers, Galati almost managed to upset Man Utd in a frankly, lessened performance from the English champions.

With Wayne Rooney playing in midfield for the first time, Sir Alex used up all his attacking options with Owen, Berbatov, Nani and Valencia all playing upfront.

After helping to set up the first goal after 10 minutes, Michael Owen was substituted for Chicarito in what was another upsetting injury problem for Owen (many will remember the 2006 World Cup when Owen left the field just minutes from the start of the match in his first game during the tournament).

Although 2-0 was great for Utd as they moved above Benfica on goal difference (Benfica drew 1-1 at home to Basel) and moving closer to the knockout stages, the last few weeks have seen a much more subdued performance by the champions.

Utd were very sloppy in midfield by their own standards.  Rooney and Anderson were both culprable for being too complacent in their passing, while a poor pass from Nani almost gifted Galati a goal if it were not for an excellent save from De Gea.

Since losing 6-1 to Manchester City at home, Man Utd have secured victories away at Aldershot in the League Cup, Everton away in the Premier League and Otelul Galati in the Champions League.  Performances have been better and another clean sheet will have kept Sir Alex happy.  However, Utd’s 11/12 campaign is increasingly being overshadowed by their noisy neighbours.

Could Manchester City Win the Premier League?

Manchester City’s surpising 6-1 victory over Man Utd at Old Trafford made them the new favorites for the Premier League title.  City have notched up 28 points from 10 games and are 5 points ahead of Utd.

The latest odds for Manchester City to win the Premier League are 5/6 at bet365 and 10/11 at Sky Bet.  Utd have odds of 7/4 and Chelsea FC are 3rd favorites at 15/2.

I personally think Manchester City are easily capable of winning the Premier League this season.  But I think it’s far too early to make predictions right now.

Roberto Mancini is proven at the top level.  His experiences building a squad at Inter and leading them to 3 successive Serie A titles proves that he is capable of leading teams to success in the league.  Now in his 3rd season in charge, Mancini has assembled an all-round title winning team with plenty of depth and playmakers up front.

Nasri, Aguero and Clichy have all been brought at the beginning of the season to add more fire power and quality to their end game.  While City have been characterized as a contained defensive team in previous seasons (utilizing a 4-2-3-1 system) and an over reliance on Tevez for goals, Manchini has changed all that with a more versatile 4-1-3-1 system and brought in two new strikers (Dzeko and Augero) to score more goals.

Both of these new strikers have proven a huge success already this season, scoring a combined total of more than 15 goals in just 15 games.  Dzeko provides a point guard upfront, someone who can hold the ball, while Aguero provides the energy, speed and finish.  Both complement each other and with further goals coming from midfield from the likes of Balotelli, Toure, Silva and Nasri, I don’t think scoring goals is going to ever be a problem for them this season.  It’s just a case of keeping possession and seeing off the smaller teams in 1-0 or 2-0 results.

On the other side of Manchester, Sir Alex is celebrating 25 years in charge of Utd, and in that time he was won 12 league titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups and 2 Champions League trophies.

He has also guided Utd to 3 Champions League Finals in the last four years and has successful built squad after squad after squad (including the 1992 golden squad which included Beckham, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt).
